I go through the same problem...usually it's stress related or something along that line. One thing I did do was look at how much caffiene I was taking in during the day...and I smoked occasionally when I was stressed out. Those are both stimulants, and when I was stressing I'd drink more soda with caffiene, and the smoking...well, it more or less forced me to stay up. Some things I have done to get to sleep are to work out pretty hard in the early evening, then take a long hot shower, and some 'sleepytime' tea...it's got herbs in it that relax you. Other things to try are to listen to music as you're lying in bed...but not to concentrate on it. If you do get to sleep, don't over-sleep(like no more than 8-9 hrs max) otherwise you'll end up tired and get yourself into a wierd pattern.
Hope this helps!

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!
1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.
2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.
The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.
After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net
Ohhh..and Good Luck!

I have used 5-HTP for over 6 months now and it has really helped me get though the night. It also counters depression by raising the levels of serotonin, which is a extra plus.
5-HTP treats sleep disorders by providing a mild psychoactive effect on REM cycles.
I would ask your doctor before using it, but it has helped me with sleep and winter blues. It is a great natural and non-addictive way to get a good nights rest.

Find a good tape that guides your thoughts into a good night's sleep before you move on to the hard core drugs (that never should be used long term). Or better yet make one yourself. I sometimes use an Edgar Cayce tape, and I never hear the end because I always fall asleep.
"Take a deep breath, and feel how wonderful it is to be in your own bed...." ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzz!

If you've suffered from insomnia for awhile now, you 1st need to see a doctor. Certain medical conditions, such as sleep apnea, can contribute to sleeplessness. You need to be tested to be certain. Then your doctor can recommend a course of treatment.
Good luck to you.

See a reputable acupuncturist. Most patients that come for insomnia don't even have to take prescription meds for it.

go to your dr and let him know whats going on. most likely the dr will perscribe a sleeping aid. Ambien, Sonoma, Lunesta. Ambien is probably my choice.

You need to figure out the roof of your problem as to why you are not sleeping. I suggest you talk to someone about that. I had a sleeping problem and then started talking to people at http://www.medsocial.com/home.aspx, they helped me a lot.
There is also a video on the website that helped a lot. Just scroll down to the sleep disorder section and it will bring it up.
