NBC, like all of the other networks, bid on the Games. They paid a ton of money, over a billion, to have the rights to cover the games for the next few games.

Read this: NBC has won the American media rights to the 2010 and 2012 Olympics with a bid that adds up to more than $2.2 billion. That represents an increase of some 47 percent over the $1.5 billion pre-emptive deal with which NBC secured the U.S. rights to the three Olympic Games through 2008.

There was no immediate word on how the Games might play out on GE-owned broadcast, cable, broadband and Internet properties, but NBC already has sketched out plans for the Summer 2004 Games in Athens that ensure Olympics presence...

It's all about money. By having a contract between the Olympic Committee and NBC, NBC and its affiliates hold a monopoly on the coverage of the games. Since the Olympics draws huge ratings, advertisers want to show their ads during that time. Therefore, NBC can get more money. It's the same thing for other big events; the Superbowl is only ever on one channel, same for the Oscars and other awards shows.

I think what NBC are doing they are making big investment to bet and bid ont he games who is going ot win and talk about players who will be in the game I think NBC are so smart about looking ahead of the game before it start in 2008 and they are already talking about having the olympic in San Francisco Bay Area 2012.
