how about some dark material like ashes to help absorb sun light heat.

Salt works down to around 20 degrees F. Below that calcium chloride works. It is usually sold separately from salt so what I do is mix the 2 together to save money. This works especially well if the temperature goes from below 20ºF during the night and above 20ºF during the day. They also work quicker if you put them on your sidewalk or driveway before it snows instead of afterwards.
