I asked a question about what kind of motorcycle to get and 9 out of 10 people didn't answer my question and instead told me not to buy one because they're "dangerous" ... sigh, if everyone on this site are such little wussies then why do I even bother?

If those 9 out of 10 people would just be more aware while they are driving then those of us that choose to ride would be a whole lot safer. If they are so concerned with our safety then why do they cut us off or blindly drive their cars as if they are the only ones on the road. It's not the motorcycle that's so dangerous it's those mindless twits that are driving around us.

According to a government study that includes 2002 data, you are almost twice as likely to be in an accident riding a motorcycle than riding in a passenger car. Motorcycle accidents are four times more likely to be deadly than are passenger car accidents. This is why 9 out of 10 people say that motorcycles are "dangerous". It's not because they a wussies.

My sister still suffers from a back injury caused when the motorcycle she and her boyfriend were riding struck a stopped station wagon, propelling her far enough to go over the length of the car. This was from 35 years ago.

Havng said that, I agree that people, in general, do go overboard regarding safety. My wife things she'll die if she rides a rollercoaster. We both thought my infant daughter would, heaven forbid, put her mouth on the floor.

It's obviously up to you whether you choose to ride a motorcycle. It is more dangerous than a car, but there's nothing wrong with waying the risks and deciding the risks are worth it - just like there's nothing wrong with others who have weighed the risks and have decided the risks are not worth it.

There does seem to be an emphasis on safety that wasn't prevalent when I was a child.

I made it through childhood intact even though I didn't have a car seat or booster seat past the age of 2. My mother always buckled me into the car.

I also made it through just fine even though I never owned a bike helmet and knee/elbow pads. My knees healed quite well each time I skinned them.

As far as motorcycles are concerned, my husband races them whenever he has the opportunity. He has wrecked before, but that's why there is safety gear: helmet, leathers, gloves, knee protection, boots, back pad, etc... He had to rebuild his bike, but that's a heck of a lot easier than rebuilding a person.

The people who chimed in to your other question were just trying to get their two points and probably didn't know a thing about motorcycles. Good luck with your search!

That was 2 pnts answer tha a lot of people didnt feel commenting on. I have a hard time to get more then 10 answers on my questions, sometimes only one of two so best answer is not even a choice sometimes. Noone was realy caught up on whole safety thing, its just lazyness or maybe question did sound interesing or subject wasnt broad enough to expland their answers. Well watever the reason i think bikes are hot and if you are responsible person who is not gon go crazy chasing cars in traffic then you be just fine. I know plenty of people that take it out once in a while to have a rush and show off and they are doing just fine! And if you want answer on motorcycles then best bet would be ask someone who ows one. But i love the sporty choppers....they expensive and most of them that look good go with the whole west coast (LA) custom kits. Those are sexiiiii!

People miss out on a lot of fun being overly cautious. Then again, it's probably best that those people aren't out on motorcycles, because due to their 'concern about safety' (and utter disregard for actually acting in a safe manner) they would probably get waxed by a car.

People hear 'motorcycles are dangerous' because people get killed riding them from time to time. People get killed in cars too, but you don't hear them telling you not to drive a car. Most motorcycles accidents involving another vehicle could be avoided if the rider knew a few simple things.

1) Pretend like you are invisible. It's always hilarious to hear someone who just hit a car say 'i didn't see the car', but it's a fact of life, people aren't looking for cars, much less motorcycles - so if you pretend they can't see you, you won't assume that they do. Even better yet - pretend like they are actually trying to hit you (and it won't be far from the truth) and then you'll be pleasantly surprised when they don't get in your lane.

2) Don't slam on the brakes. Motorcycles can stop considerably faster than cars. If you see that everyone is slamming on their brakes in front of you - try to find an escape route, go around rather than stopping quickly and getting rear ended to death.

3) Concentrate on riding - don't listen to your mp3 player while on a motorcycle. They are good on long trips, but if you are riding around in traffic, being able to hear everything going on around you can be the difference between life and high speed pavement.
Keep your eyes open - very few cars actually 'come out of nowhere' despite the number of times you hear people claim it.

4) Get a bike that puts you in a comfortable riding position, but still has plenty of handling. I suggest a Suzuki Boulevard C50 or M50. The C is a cruiser style, but still has plenty of speed, and handling. (the 90 cubic inch version of each just adds more torque) The M50 is sportier, but both come with fuel injection (no more carbs to adjust) shaft drive (no chain to clean/lube/adjust) and liquid cooling (no more overheating).

There are many times when I have to agree with you. Have you seen some of the safety precautions they have to put on everything? Like on a blow dryer, "Do Not Use While Showering or Bathing"...There are idiots out there, I guess we have to protect.

To most people, motorcycles are dangerous. BUT that's if you have an idiot in the seat of the motorcycle, who unfortunately give all motorcycle riders a bad name; and it sounds like you are not one of them. (I'm hoping you're wearing a helmet too!) People don't think twice about cars...most daily deaths are from automobile accidents.

ANYTHING can be dangerous. Even the most innocent looking item can be dangerous.

If you'd said that people didn't want to give their names or addresses online, then I'd have said they are right. But a motorcycle? Yes, people are going overboard with being "Safe"... Especially since it's YOUR choice wether or not you want to own a motorcycle.

I don't think it's so much that people are over-conscious of their own safety that is the problem... it's that they feel they must subject other people to their idea of "safe"...

that seems to happen a lot on here. it's like they don't read the entire question or something.

although my husband calls me a safety nazi i would not have told you not to buy one. i might have have told you to wear a helmet though.

i like motorcycles (i watch american chopper all the time). if i was going to buy one i would try for a harley.
we're not all wussies, so keep trying.
