We have 30 big trees on a 1/3 of an acre property (big = taller than the house; some are 5 stories tall and 2-3 feet thick in the trunk). ALL of them are too tall to simply drop - they will hit something (fencing, neighbors house, our house).

We want to take about 20 of them out. I wager this is going to cost a fortune. Does anyone have any clue what we are looking at? The trees themselves have no value (mostly gumball trees) even as firewood.

We live in SE Virginia if that helps.

I don't know how much it would cost to pay someone but you could get a friend to climb and cut off pieces at a time and burn it then you won't have to pay someone else to do it for you.

Yes, it is going to cost a fortune. Sorry.

I'm in Illinois so I have no idea how the prices for tree work are there.

I am in the process of taking a good sized ash. I have two bids - one for $800 the other at $850. For one tree. Even if you figure you could get a quantity discount and got them for $400 apiece including stump grinding (don't forget that!), it will be a ton.

I think I would talk to a few tree people and get a few bids just straight -let them supply the numbers. Then if they are quoting $8,000 or something huge, find another contractor and offer a figure. Just say to them, "I have $5,000 (or some number) to spend and I'll give you $5,000 (or some number) to take these 20 trees out." The worst they can say is no. You could also come back with a counter offer to whoever you get your original bid(s) from. Try a flat rate for the job instead of a per tree figure.

Or just do 3 this year, and 3 the next, and 3 the next, etc.

My brother has taken out trees on a couple of occasions and now has a service he likes but before he found them, his trick was to get both this year's phone book and last year's phone book. If a tree service was in both books he figured they had been around long enough to be stable and weren't fly-by-night companies. He then just called like 10 of them till he found one with a bid he liked. Getting lots of bids is a pain, but for a job as big as yours, shopping around might be worth it.

Hope this helps.

hello.OK 5he price will very for you.It will depend on a few things.can they use a bucket truck to remove the trees. If they can it will be cheaper than climbing the trees by hand with ropes. Two do you want them to clean up the brush.I mean to chip the brush with a chipper.Third do you want the wood to be removed or left.Four do you want the stump removed.OK now. I am from Illinois. So I may be off alto or a little. To cut a tree and no clean up and stump.Maybe 200-250..Now to cut the tree and chip the brush 325-500.And to cut the tree and chip the brush and remove the wood chunks.500-900.and stump removal with run on a stump 20 inch diameter 60-100.They will charge you by the inch diameter...So you could be looking at minium 5000 and maxi um 20,000.It all depends on what you want them to do.
