There are certain key words to have in your website so that it will come up in searches. My brother works in IT and he puts them in the HTML coding so that the search words don't show up on the screen. If your website isn't professionally done, try including some key words in white font at the bottom of the page so they don't show up. For example, if you are an event planner in Lubbock County, Texas, you would hide these words at the bottom:

wedding event party planner planning Lubbock County Texas TX

Or something along those lines. Also, try to make the blue bar at the top of your webpage say your keywords or business name so that it will have a better chance of 'matching' to what the searcher is looking for.

I should also mention that certain search engines work differently. Google is great because it gives search results in order of popularity and relevance... the first hit is most likely pretty close to what you're searching for. But with Yahoo, the advertisers pay for placement. When you do a search, the first three of four hits might only come up first because the advertiser paid for prime placement. The fifth, sixth, and seventh hits are what SHOULD have come up in a relevance search. Hope that helps!

First you optimise your website on targeted keywords. Then submit it to various search engines and directories like google, yahoo, dmoz, joeant, etc.. Do link builiding with similar sites having quality content. Assign alt tag to images, implement site map. There are many more strategies but these are the basic ones.

That is a loaded question and not one that can be answered with any specific answer. It really depends on what you are trying to do! it also depends on what keywords you are targeting. Who are your customers or visitors?

I would recommend you take a basic SEO course and get a piece of software that will help you learn the basics. Do a google search for free seo courses.

The most important thing you want to start with is optimizing you webpage. Focus on ONE specific topic for each page of your site. Use meta tags, h1 tags and use your keywords about 4 to 6 times throughout your page.

There is alot to it really! ....

Build inbound links to your website.
Most of the directories online charge a one time fee to review your site and add it to their index. Here are three of my favorites:

http://www.kahmer.com
http://www.joeant.com
The more inbound links to your site, the better you will rank
with Yahoo / Google / MSN.

Submit it individually to each engine.

But it helps to have keywords and links, and other sites linking to you.
