My father had to have Americans working for him for nearly 30 years and in his (educated) opinion he had never experienced such lack of geographical awareness from any nation....frankly I would be surprised if (the majority) knew where France was! American schooling focusses on their own geography (the "American Way of Life") keeping a narrow view of the world and hence their gung-ho approach to diplomacy.

This is really odd. Americans now love the British, when it comes to support.

But if it were not for the French, The Colonies which eventually became the USofA, would never have won their war. The French gave the US support over and over through the years. They sold the US the Louisiana purchase which the US then used to claim they owned lands all the way to the Pacific ocean, even though the French had never quite gotten to Oregon.

The French supported the North during the Civil war, the British Supported the South. If it were not for the French helping with the blockades of the Southern ports and in keeping the British warships busy, the South probably would have won.

The French supported the US up to their last war with Britain, at the end of the 1800's.

France and Germany, two allies to the US, up until the first world war. Then although the British sank the Lusitania, not the Germans, the US joined the British in the 1st world war, instead of the Germans, partially because the British were on the side of the French.

Americans should be on the side of the French, but for some reason, even after over 200 years of unending support, Americans have decided they are nothing.

Just like Americans to trash their allies though. Americans have broken just about every treaty they have ever signed, even when they insist other countries keep to them. Take the Nuclear disarmament treaty, which the US is threatening Iran with. According to the treaty, the US is not supposed to be making more nukes. But, the year after the US signed the treaty, they were making new nukes.

The USofA, Liars, Thieves (they stole the Lands from the American Indians after all) and hypocrites. So much for being God's Chosen land. All they are are cheats. They say one thing, and then do something else. Why should anyone trust them?

I'm American and I have no problem with the French. It was a grievous embarassment to many Americans when the current (mis)administration of the unelected George W Bush was making out the French to be some sort of "bad guys" for opposing the US acting unilaterally and invading another sovereign nation (Iraq) without any provocation at all and with no proper and true diplomatic channels. The French , and the Germans too for that matter, were quite correct to vigorously oppose it and to not send any help. Look where that horrible invasion / occupation has gotten everyone today.

I think France is a beautiful country, they have a beautiful language, a fantastic and proud history as well. Some of the authors I have studied most closely have been French as well, Rimbaud, Baudelaire (both poets), as well as Foucault and Sartre (the philosophers). If I knew how to speak the language fluently I would gladly love to sojourn there for long periods of time (if I had the money) or even see about living in some area of Paris, probably the 16th arrondissement.

I love the langauge and I dream of going to Paris. Yet I am not the typical black female. Most, I would think, probably don't have an opinion. Most men I know think that french men look a bit gay because here in America, men tend to wear clothes that are much bigger and loose-fitting. French men have been known to wear tight jeans and form-fitting shirts. I still think french men can be attractive...there's just a cultural diffeence. I have heard the rumors that the french are a bit aarogant and proud (which is not a bad thing) and that their bathing habits are a bit different. Here in the states we wash at least once a day and wear lots of deoderants and perfume. But, other than that, the french seem like wonderful people.

Well. I'm British and I'm a chef. Doubtless, the French will roar that there is no such thing as a British chef.

As it happens, I have a lot of time for the French. Any time that I have visited France, and when my French interlocutors find out that I am a chef, I get invited to the kitchens of all the local restaurants, and often I eat free of charge. Whether the French are trying to demonstrate the superiority of their cuisine to that of Britain, I do not know, but I do try to beat them at their own game by cooking them a good curry. Admittedly, curry is not 'British' cuisine per se, but I have learned to cook authentic Punjabi food and the processes involved often stymie French chefs.

The French are a proud nation, and their military defeats in world war 2 and Vietnam owe more to political ineptitude rather than military incompetance. It is this political ineptitude that is prejudicing relations between the USA and France. However, when the US is led by a megalomaniac, and the UK is controlled by a bumbling spin addict who is, in himself, addicted to the ministrations of his PR gurus, maybe the French have the right attitude, and maintain their Gallic aloofness and sang froid to considerable advantage to themselves.

USA, UK, France. All great nations. But if I am offered the choice of eating at MacDonalds, MacFisheries or Maxim's, I'll choose the latter any time.

(Any Frenchmen reading this - does this help towards me getting a Michelin star for my restaurant?)

there is sort of a stereotype that they think they are superior. However, I don't personally know any French people so I can't say if it's true or not. But I love their language. It is very beautiful!

Parisians are annoying, but the rest of the French are ok. Chirac kinda gets on my nerves but de Villepin isn't bad....
Their food is decent, their wine sublime.
