Definitely rent first then buy, you want to make sure you like snowboarding first. It could be that you'll take up skiing better than snowboarding. Every person takes to one or the other best.

There are several variables that can be changed in the board from length to the edge of the board. Also take note of what the snowboard shop equips you with and figure if you like it or want to change it up. But you need a starting point to judge from.

Most importantly get good protecting equipment, helmet, pads and definitely a good wrist brace. Snowboarding the last time I checked was in the top three sports for injuries.

Here are some links to articles about types of snowboards and also what types might fit your style, level and snow type.

I also forgot to tell you, right now until March all snowboard and ski equipment is selling at a premium. So if you rent for now (2 to 3 times) and buy in mid to late March when the season is coming to a close, you'll probably wind up paying close to the same amount of money overall. The best deals are in April when ski shops are trying to clearance out the left over equipment (yes, this does include Ebay).

Hope this helps you out and good luck on the slopes,

Tex

hi josh i work at a ski slope where loads of people have a go at snowboarding. on the whole most people when they have had a go, do go on to take the sport up so getting a board of eBay would be a good idea, try to go for a good make such as Burton, Gnu, Ride etc stay away from makes such as Quechua, be aware that some boards have been trashed on dry slopes such as mine. as for the height of the board it should be between your chin and your nose. watch out for Burton boards without bindings as only Burton bindings will fit, but most of the other boards any binding will fit.
hope this helps

try it out before you make the investment. it's cheap to rent, about $25-30. try it out so you don't waste a few hundred bucks to find out you don't like the sport.
