i am thinking of wearing my denim jacket when i go out tonight (for my 21st b-day) and i want to know if my jeans should be a lighter blue or a darker blue? thanks for all the help.

Actually, the rule is...NO JEANS with a jean jacket. This is a well-known fashion don't--unless you are a cowboy. Wear the jacket with black pants or a skirt. It's your 21st birthday, you should dress up a little anyway.

It's definately a fashion don't to wear a denim jacket with denim jeans regardless of the colour.. what about wearing a different pair of trousers or a skirt ?

If you want to wear jeans with a denim jacket, then wear the darker pair and accessories. (necklaces or a cute scarf, pins, etc.)
You might consider wearing pants of a different fabric to avoid looking like you are wearing a denim "suit."

I personally don't like denim on denim because for one-- it looks weird when they don't match colors, and two-- it looks weird when they DO match colors. it's kind of a lose-lose situation.
why not wear a white skirt or dress with your denim jacket instead?
If you really want the jeans, go with the darker. It won't look as contrasted.

I tend to go with a khaki pant when wearing denim jackets... or get an exact match of the shades of denim, I personally think that khaki cargo type pants look the best though.

Personally, I would not pair denim with denim-- its too much. If you have a pair of black pants or jeans, try that. It looks very trendy with a black shirt underneath your denim jacket. Happy birthday!
