What do you do to help soothe them? My baby is 19 1/2 weeks. This is her second ear infection in the past month. She just about got rid of one and got another cold. Which helped it come back. The weather here is crazy and I know that's whats giving her this cold. One day it's 70 the next 40 and I continue to dress her warm. The last time she had an infection it was crazy. The constant screaming and I felt bad. What do you do to help them feel better besides the antibiotics? Does anything help put your baby at ease?

My baby is on antibiotics. She was on it the first time. Today after her appointment her doctor gave me another one that is a little stronger.

We have a cool mist humidifier set up in the room. A regular humidifier in the family room. She takes ocean spray nasal drops for her nose and pediacare long lasting cough. All that her doctor has reccomended.

I have three children, and my oldest was prone to ear infections. What you can do to help is don't give her Motrin until she is at least 6 months old. Tylenol works fine for a little one your daughter's age. Just follow the dosing instructions on the bottle. Here's what really helped my daughter's ear infection pain: dampen a washcloth and warm it in the microwave (be careful not to get it too hot!). To make sure it's not too hot, press it to the skin of your elbow or just inside your wrist. It should feel warm, but not hot. Press the warmed washcloth onto the ear that hurts. Your baby's pain is actually just in front of the actual ear, but if you cover the whole area with the washcloth, you'll make sure to get heat on the sore area. The heat will help soothe the pain until Tylenol can help, or it may soothe the pain completely without having to use Tylenol. I always gave my children Tylenol before bed when they had ear infections. The pain seems to be worse when they're laying down.

Good luck!

A "little infection" can turn into a more severe one, especially in the ear, so I would be rather cautious with this. Since your baby is feeling so miserable, I would try and get a second opinion from a different doctor, and perhaps it would be best if you insisted on an antibiotic prescription if the ear appears to have an infection, even if only 'a little'. Ear infections are terribly painful and they can progress in intensity very rapidly. I was a sufferer of chronic ear infections as a child, and even into my teenage years, and I wouldn't want my baby enduring such discomfort and pain because a doctor didn't think it was that big of a deal. Good luck, and I hope she starts feeling better soon!

Between illness and teething and ear infections, all of the symptoms are pretty similar. Ask your doctor what you can give for the pain; cooled chamomile tea and Hyland's Teething tablets (avoid Orajel when you get to teething) may also help; if she has trouble breathing (got mucus too?), you might want to try a humidifier. The antibiotics can irritate the stomach a lot and may be contributing to her discomfort. And, of course, lots of hugs.

Using a blow dryer on the lowest setting does help as well as warm compresses. My youngest daughter had 15 ear infections within her first year...unfortunately it was well after that that somebody told me about ear drops that you can administer that is kinda like ambesol....it numbs it. It also works great. I got mine from the doctor through a prescription but I do believe you can buy them OTC as well.

I'm so sorry, there really isn't much you can do but hold and love them, it's a miserable time, you feel like ripping your hair out, take a big breath, good luck, and remember it wont be long, three days or so until the meds kickin, make sure she takes them all even when she seems better or it will creep up again

Put a warm washcloth in a bag and then put the bag over the ear area having a towel between the bag and their ear...make sure that it isn't too hot because you don't want them to get burned, but you want it warm enough so they get some heat from it.

The weather does not cause colds. Viruses cause colds. Also, most ear infections are viral so antibiotics do nothing. I would ask the doctor to determine if this is viral or bacterial.

Try to occupy them.

Taking warm baths.
Walking them.
Pushing them in a stroller.

Give baby some tylenol to relive the pain.

ask your doctor for auralgan ear drops. They are placed directly in the ear and dull the pain. This in combination with infants ibuprofen (ask your doctor for dosing) helps with the pain so your baby can eat, sleep, etc.
