Two days ago all the student clubs and other organizations in my college were handing out information and membership forms in the hallway near the entrance of the school. I picked up a paper about an "honors society" called Phi Theta Kappa.
According to the paper, those with a GPA over 3.5 and over 12 credit hours can join this entity. It also said that there are numerous benefits such as scholarships and "Phi Theta Kappa" will appear on your transcript (which is supposed to make you look good for when you transfer I guess).
It sounds good and I have the qualifications to join. But they ask for a $65 membership fee and to be honest something just feels really fishy about this whole organization. The fact that they hardly give you any information about what they do and keep pretty much everything about the group in the dark unless you are a member is also suspicious. It feels as though I'm joining some sort of cult or something. But then again, I could just be paranoid and this could

very well be a legit organization that will somehow benefit me. Anyway, does anyone know anything about this "Phi Theta Kappa" thing? Is it legit? Also, is it really worth joining or is it all just hype and marketing schemes?

PTK is not a scam.
I was a PTK when I was in college and it did indeed make my application for a transfer school look better.
I now work for a private women's two year college and PTK is a vital part of our campus community. We have the oldest chapter in the country and our students travel to national PTK meetings. The PTK students are leaders on the campus and sponsor great activities. I highly recommend it.

I was an officer in Phi Theta Kappa for a short time. It's legit. It's similar to "Phi Beta Kappa", except that PTK is the honors society for community colleges, whereas Phi Beta Kappa is for 4-year universities. They do a lot of community service work, and it looks good on your resume/transcript. They have a website, just google the name. Like any other organization, you will get more for your money if you participate in their activities. Oh, and when I transferred to a 4-year university they let me apply for a scholarship solely for PTK members. If you ever plan on transferring, then I strongly recommend you join PTK.

It is legit. It is the 2 year school version of Phi Beta Kappa...It helps for transferring to a four year college and it even goes on your diploma and transcript.

I am a member of Phi Theta Kappa, and it shows on my transcript. It helps for transfering to 4 year college, because you have to have higher GPA. And it is legitimate.

I wondered the same thing when I was invited to join. It is a legitimate organization for community college students. Many four-year unversities have scholarships that specifically cater to PTK members. I'm in the process of applying for four-year schools, and many of the applications ask if you are a PTK member. It's definitely worth it to join!

Sounds like an off-shoot of "Phi BETA Kappa" that's trying to get your money.
The only honor societies I would personally spend money on are Golden Key and PBK. I'm not sure what the requirements are for GK, but I know that the undergrad I attended required that one have a GPA of at least 3.9 to join PBK as a senior or had to be in the top .5% of the class to join as a junior. PBK is by invitation only

Are you sure it isn't Phi Beta Kappa? Because that is a legit honor society and I know that they have a membership fee around 70$ and they require a GPA over 3.5. But Phi Beta Kappa is an invitation only society so you can't just decide to join.
Maybe some is just trying to scam off the prestige of Phi Beta Kappa

There is such an organization called Phi *Beta* Kappa, and it is legitimate. Check out their website at:

Phi "Theta" Kappa, however, sounds like a scam.
