Salty Dog - is a slang term sailors will use to talk about an experienced sailor (one that has actual sea experience). You could here members of the Navy use it just as much as old fishermen hanging out in a bar.

I've heard over the years some guys using it to talk about a Horny Sailor - but that isn't really the original meaning.

Of course you don't need a Phd to understand that the "Salty" part refers to sea water. As for the "Dog", I've heard stories that it would relate to the fact that Fishermen would bring their dogs with them when they would leave to fish.

In french, we use the term "Loup de Mer" or "Vieux Loup de mer" which translates to "Sea Wolf" or "Old Sea Wolf".
