well there are 3 branches, legislative (make the laws), judicial (interpret the laws) and executive (pretty much oversees the previous 2) An example would be say a law is passed by the house of reps., then it needs to be checked by the senate, who then sends it to the president to pass or veto, now that is a series of checks, the balance would come from the judicial branch, of all of the above pass a law, the judicial branch can still declare it unconstitutional and "unpass" it, with our current president, the idea of checks and balances has been somewhat strewn, he has passed laws to give himself more power to get aroudn the checks and balances that make out country a fair free world

The US Constitution gives our government 3 branches:

1. Legislative--the Congress passes bills that become laws.

2. Executive--the President enforces laws.

3. Judiciary--the Courts interpret laws.

Here's how checks and balances work.

1. Congress passes a law. The President looks at the law, and decides it is bad. He has the right to veto the bill, which means it will not become law unless 2/3 of the members of Congress vote to override the veto. This is an example of an Executive check on the power of the Legislature.

2. The President wishes a man to be appointed ambassador or judge. The Senate has to vote to confirm the nomination. If they don't, that person does not get their appointment. This is an example of a Legislative check on the Executive.

3. A bill is passed, and the President signs it into law. However, down the line, someone says that law isn't in line with what is stated in the Constitution. He brings suit, and it goes to the courts--possibly all the way to the Supreme Court. That body made adjuge the law to be Constitutional, or it may declare it unconstitutional. This is an example of the Judiciary check on the Legislative and Executive branches.

4. Only the Legislative branch may impeach a member of the Judiciary or Executive branches and vote to remove them from office. This is an example of a Legislative check on the Judicial and Executive branches.

The Consitution states that the three branches are equal in power--the power of the Executive is balanced by the power of the Judiciary and Legislature, etc. etc.

I hope this helps.

When passing a law, for example, Senate can vote a law into effect. If the President disagrees, he can veto it. If Congress still wants it to pass, then 2/3 of both houses have to vote yes. Congress can override the President's veto - this is a check on the President's powers.

Also in terms of balance - we have a 3 tier system. The President is the executive branch. Congress is the legislative branch and the Supreme Court is the judicial branch. Each branch has its own powers and functions, to make sure that no one group has too much power. It's meant to balance out the powers of the government.

The congress makes a law, the president vetos it. The president takes an action that is challenged in the Supreme court, and the action is reversed.

Two separate powers, where each can police the other.

it is a system that is set up between the 3 branches of the government(legislative, judicial and executive) to make sure that no one branch has to much control over the nation like if congress(legislative) wants to pass a bill it needs the presidents(executive) approval before it becomes law and even then the courts(Judaical) reviews the ethical and fairness of the law to make sure it doesn't violate the rights of the us population in any way(IE make sure the law is "constitutional")
