The psychological problem with dieting is this; when you quit drinking, you dont drink. when you quit smoking, you dont smoke. you cant stop eating. I hear where you are comming from and I understand how you feel. I am a heavy gal myself. I would suggest that you make this a team effort. Take a walk every morning or evening together...even at the mall when the weather is not do good. Grocery shop together, read lables. cut back on processed, fried and fatty foods. read cookbooks together, even if you dont plan on making anything from the book. Try a new food once a week, take turns cooking. Keep a journal [both of you] for one month of everything that you eat or drink...down to water and chewing gum. Weight gain very often will make a person lose self confidence and become depressed, so talking to her own doctor would be a good thing. Ask her to cut back on her evenings out with the girls by one night a week [for starters]. There is no quick fix to this, and honestly, she does not want to lose weight fast. If she does make a good change in her diet and exercise, she may see up to 4 pounds drop off each week for a few weeks, then it sould taper down to 2 pounds a week. that is ideal as the body tends to adjust better when the weight loss is not too abrupt. Lastly, after dinner, have dessert! make it either healthy, or a small portion of something gooey and good. Dessert tells the brain that the meal is over and it is time to stop eating. hope that some of this helps. Be well!

It's a bit much to do all this in one go! Best to tackle each 'vice' one at a time and before you do, think hard about why you are giving them up. Do you really want to? There's no point packing up smoking if it's down to peer pressure, for example.
I 've never smoked or been on a diet and don't often drink - yet my life is far from boring! I keep busy with working, studying and family. And a good social life helps too.

Some say that healthy living doesn't make you live longer, it just feels longer!
As an ex smoker & binge drinker I know what you mean. Stick with it though & eventually you will start to feel the benefits. I gave up smoking 6 years ago & it was the best thing I have ever done.

I haven't had a ciggie since Monday - I used to really enjoy a ciggie but it's time to stop. You will be really bored in 20 years when you have lung cancer, liver disease and are overweight and all your friends are out enjoying life! Think of the future.
