I have the same phone and initially had the same problem, that being said, you probably have either too large a file and/or the current bit rate is too high.
You are limited in the following ways in terms of ringtones:
Ringtone: 600KB
MP3s must be 192Kbps or under
You need to crop the original song down to roughly 30 secs. (can use Audacity for that), and then re-format into lower bitrate (can use Lame/RazorLame for that). Make sure to stay within the limits and you should not have anymore issues w using your own mp3s as ringtones.
This guy explains the process pretty good. Gives you the basics, there's sooo much more you can do w Audacity (it's an mp3 editor- you can really go nuts customizing the output).

As an additional note, you don't need RazorLame, but once you see how Lame works, you're probably gonna want to get RazorLame bc it is a "front-end" interface for Lame (which means you can adjust the encoding options

to get you mp3s as ringtones they need to be below 600kb in size if i remember correctly or else it wont read it as a ring tone.
