Criteria is the plural; the singular is criterion.

It is probably because the singular form of those words is seldom used or heard. About the apostrophes in plurals: people are confused about the use of apostrophes do they automatically add one before final 's' whether it is needed or not (just to be on the safe side). It is taught but it's easier for most to go with the majority(needlessly adding apostrophes) than to think about it.

Criteria is already the plural of Criterion

'Criteria' is already plural - duh !
The singular is 'criterion'. So you can say, "The criterion is ...." or "The criteria are...."

Mind you, one often hears quite well-educated people saying, "The criteria is ...." and I have even heard: "Criterias". Maybe, in 50 years' time, 'criteria' will have become singular and the correct plural will be 'criterias'. After all, remember that 'peas' used to be singular (spelt 'pease') and the correct plural was 'peasen'.

Criterion.

Edit: I just checked the dictionary to be sure this is correct. Now I catch your trick. Criteria is plural. Got it.

'Criteria' is definitely plural and I always thought that the singular form was 'criterion', but when I saw others claim that it is 'criterium', I went to the spell checker here to see which one Yahoo recognized as a correctly spelled word.

'Criterion', as I thought, is the correct singular form. At 'criterium', the spell checker actually asked if I wanted to change it to 'criterion'.
