I'm signing up to WoW tonight and was just wondering, does this game involve any skill or is it just "put your time in and advance levels"?

A game like Quake 3 arena is all about skill. Now, how much time you need to put into the game in order to obtain that skill is different among people.

It seems to me that you can't really be "good" at WoW. Just put your time in and advance levels and everyone makes fun of you because you spend 5 hours a day online.

Am I way off here?

I want to be psyched about the game but it just seems like mundane, repetitive crap where you just need to spend insane amounts of time in order to "get good" when in reality you aren't "good"...you're just showing everyone how much time you spend online.

At least with Q3 I can say "I'm good" and no one really knows how much time I have spent playing it (and in fact, a true gamer wouldn't even need a lot of time to get good at such a game...whereas WoW any dolt can play it and be worshipped).

pretty much everyone can level in wow with persistance - but there are indeed skilled players. anyone can mash buttons but the skilled players understand the concept of aggro, the skills of their class, their roles in a party, understand what spells or attacks to do at any given moment and so much more.

i think skill is most apparent in instances (where it is just a group of 5, 10, 40 or 25 people (depending on the instance))...

you'll be playing with a group and realize the warrior who is tanking knowns exactly what to do, how to hold aggro, will react if a healer gets aggro and will keep his party alive. you may not realize it right away, but the next time you party with a group and see someone who doesn't know what the f to do, that you miss that skilled player.
----------------------
you most often hear about skilled warriors and healers, as they truly are the classes that can quickly wipe a raid if they are not good players. the other classes are a little easier to slip under the radar...

for 1.5 years i was in one of the top guilds on our server - first to down instance bosses, world bosses, etc. everyone knew what to do, everyone was indeed a skilled player (some of the best on the server) and it was amazing working with such great group. for personal reasons i decided to step back from raiding - how i miss those raiding experiences, now when i raid with a new group, it is painful - people not paying attention, people not knowing what to do, doing the wrong things at the wrong time, not worrying about their aggro control, etc.

You've got it backward. Since everyone in Quake 3 arena uses aimbots and other hacks, that is the game that takes no skill.

Leveling up in WoW takes little skill. Or rather, the more knowledge and skill you have and the better you understand how to use the tools of your particular class, the faster and easier it is to level up.

There are two areas in WoW that take ALOT of skill. The first is instance dungeons. An instance dungeon is a part of the world that spawns individually for each group of people who enter it. The mobs in there are waaay tougher than the average mobs and can't be solo'd unless you are like 20 levels higher than them (then, what's the point). You need a group to battle them. And that requires correct group tactics. These are specific to your class abilities but involve cooperation and controlling the aggro of the mobs there. If you fail, expect your party to be wiped out in short order.

The other aspect that involves skill is PvP. WoW has a robust PvP system, separated out by level to make sure people are on relatively even footing. Your skill level and understand of what your class can do, as well as group tactics, will determine how much of your PvP time you spend laying face down in the dirt.

It depends on what you want out of the game. There is some skill involved if you like to pvp. The gear is equally as important in this game and I think thats what you spend a lot of time getting. If you are just pve type person i would say do not buy this game. The quests are repetitive and there is really no story line to follow.

Yes, you can be skilled at WoW and yes, it's very addictive. And it's not just about gaining levels, it's about completing objectives and getting that flippin sweet flying mount or that badass epic sword. PvP, you fight other players in duels and battlegrounds or Horde toons if you're Alliance, Alliance toons if you're Horde, in the world. If another player is more skilled than you, you're probably gonna get rocked. Plus, some of the world events can be challenging if you don't know what you're doing.

There might be some problem solving skill and memorization that is helpful, but it is mostly just a point-and-click interface. It can be fun, but monotonous unless you're into that kind of game. I grow weary after several months. Mostly you have to log long hours to complete tasks to get money to get stuff that you can use to advance further.

As long as you're somewhat intelligent, things shouldn't be much of a problem. And since I noticed in your question that you have good grammar, then I'm going to assume you're fairly smart. Smart enough for WoW, in any case.

Welcome to the addiction, n00b...

And why are you worried about being "good?" Just have fun with it.

In my tenure in WoW I have come across many who suck balls at the class they play. Playing your class takes skill. You have to make split second decisions in fights and such.

It is an easy interface to learn, but yes there is skill involved. You have to learn your class to get the most out of it.

i can't link the quest due to being at work but i can tell ya to go to thottbot and use that to try and find it...it may only cost one gold but from all the pallies i've known it cost more because of all the crap you have to buy to complete the quests...and instances you have to run.
