Both. He lived 1452–1485. It was the Late Middle Ages (1300–1500) but the Renaissance (about 1400-1600) began during that age. To make it more confusing, it's also considered to be the time when the Early Modern Period (late 1400s-1750) began.

The first link about the Middle Ages explains how scholars use different names for the 'ages' depending on what part of Europe you are talking about. 15th century Italian history is considered Renaissance but the rest of Europe in the 15th century is usually considered 'medieval'. In England, they say that 1485 is the end of the Middle Ages because that's when Richard III died and a new royal house (the Tudors) took over. The English Renaissance (different from the Italian one) began shortly after.

No one can seem to agree on exact dates of the Ages since they all overlap each other anyway. Richard III lived in a transitional period.

Sorry it's all wiki but it's got the easiest/fastest explanation

Richard III (1452-1485) lived in the Middle Ages. Although there was the Italian renaissance at the time. The Renaissance did not reached England, until the Reign of Henry VIII (time of Henry's reign 1509-1547). The Middle Ages, is not the Renaissance as one of the answers above said. In fact the Middle ages are also know as the dark ages

I thought the Middle Ages and the Renaissance were the same thing, the period after the Dark Ages, the rebirth of Enlightenment.
