In the effort of making my answer succinct, I am going to make a generalization (meaning its not applicable across the board but has its place in general). Both are unhealthy and destructive but I would rather the mental institution.....
WHY?
People in Jail - don't care/feel/think enough
People in mental institutions - care/feel/think too much
I'd more likely connect with the "feelers" than the "avoider"

I would take jail over the nut hut any day. You meet far more interesting people in jail (Nelson Mandela, Sadam Hussein) and you have a much better chance of finding a job when you get out (who would hire a nutter). I also have a problem with the forced meds. I would smoke hash that has been smuggled in up someones bum before I would take litium or anything like that.

Nut hut, definitely. I don't know why, but jail sounds a lot more scary than a nut hut.
