General Care & Maintenance
Daily: In addition to turning on and off lights and feeding, you will need to monitor the water temperature. Coldwater tanks do not require a heater, but you will want to ensure that the temperature remains relatively constant. An inexpensive liquid crystal thermometer that attaches to the outside of tank will work great. FYI, goldfish can thrive at water temperatures between 50 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit.

Like all goldfish, Fancy Goldfish, prefer cool water in the range of 35 to 75 degrees F. with 65 degrees being about ideal. Of course, these fish must be allowed to adjust gradually to a temperature change. For example, don't take fish from an aquarium in your home that might be 70 degrees and put them in an outdoor pond at 50 degrees F.

Goldfish are generally of colder waters so 78 degress is def out of the question, those temps are for tropical fish. I keep my goldfish tank (i have 4 fish tanks) right between 65 degrees and 68 degrees.

Goldfish are known as "coldwater fish" for a very good reason. :) They like goldwater. Anything over 75 is too warm for them, and anything between 68 and 72 is perfect. However, they can function normally until about 50F, although they might eat less. Below that, and they will still be fine as long as the water doesn't freeze solid, because they pretty much go dormant.

Temperatures over 77 °F can be extremely dangerous for goldfish. that's why they are coldwater fish. 68 to 75 degrees F is preferable.

if you are talking about your comet goldfish (feeder fish), then that is way to warm! Goldfish like colder water. I never have my tank above 68 degrees.

Only tropical fish like/enjoy that warm of water (which means that you have a heater in your tank). Goldfish aren't tropical.

Lose the heater.

Goldfish do NOT thrive below 60F. They slow their metabolism and go into a hibernation mode. They get no nutrients in their bodies since they aren't digesting properly.
