I have a Time, AMD Athlon AMD 2200+ with 512mb of RAMan d 1.8ghz. I just want to tweak my pc a little and get it to run quicker, however although i know a little, i dont know a lot, I can upgrade to 1mb ram, however, how do i know whether or not it is ddr or sd ram i need, also where is the old ram in the casing and do i just simply replace it, (as I did with my laptop)?

Visit www.crucial.com, a RAM seller. Have the site scan your computer and it'll tell you what RAM you currently have installed and what options you have for upgrading.

In a desktop the memory mdules are long and thin, they tend to be towards the centre of the motherbard. To upgrade just replace the modules. You could open the PC and lok at what is written on the modules to find out what they are, the motherboard should also have a model number you can look up.

If you know what processors your motherboard can support you may also be able to improve that. Again this information can be found by looking up your motherboard.

An easier way to find out what memory you can use would be to go to http://www.crucial.com and run the system scan, this will tell you what you have and what you can get.

You mean upgrade to 1 Gig of ram, you've already 512 meg.

I would take the old ram out (handle it very carefully and put it in an anti-static bag if you have one).

Take it to a computer store, and have them show you what they have available. Depending on how many slots you have, and how much memory is on each stick of ram, you might need to replace them with bigger sticks. You generally want to match up the size of the sticks, but I don't think it actually matters that much.

this is what ram looks like the slots in the bottom are in different places depending on what type inside pc it is usually in a brown slot with locks at both ends sometimes there is an empty slot next to the one being used if this is the case just buy another 512 and put it in plus the 512 you got will make 1 meg if the slots are full you will have to replace one or both

The board that that processor runs on generally only handles DDR ram, to check, take the memory stick out, remembering to anti-stat yourself by touching the power supply unit with your hand and check how many sets of gold coloured "teeth" the memory board has, if two sets, it's DDR and if three, it's SDRAM.
Hope this helps.

Run SIW (System Information for Windows). It will tell you exactly what RAM you have and you can match the specs when you go to buy RAM.

reomve old, insert new - or if theres room just add additional and keep old in too.

the type you need will be determined by your motherboard, not processor so i can't help there, however judging by the age of the processor you have its most likely going to be pc133 sdram your after.
