I'm in the Army and we do a lot of running and marching, and it hurts a lot. It bothers me not knowing what it is that hurts, especially since it's not a sprain or stress fracture.

EDIT: It's not shin splints! Trust me, I was in basic combat training, I know what shin splints are! This is lower down, directly on the opposite side of my foot from the Achilles tendon.

Sounds like shin splints. Do daily exercises to strengthen them. Stand with the back of your shoulders against a wall, and your heels about a foot from the wall. Raise your toes up and down. Scroll through the questions I asked. I asked a question about how to treat/prevent shin splints and received many helpful answers.

Sounds like you have "shin splints" or a pain in your Tibialis Anterior muscle
