Easy - consider the following:



In the above, the "name" is the element and the "first" and "last" are it's attributes.

In general, attributes describe something about the element and make sense only with the element in question i.e. they don't have an independent existence.

An "element" is like an object or a web page. The "attribute" is a specific setting about that object. For example, you can have a TEXT Element, and its FONT Attribute would be set to BOLD.
