It's natural selection.
Those mutations that resulted in rounder eyes than the previous generation also resulted in animals that could "roll" their eyes and have a larger field of vision, thus enabling them to see their predators with more warning, so that they could run away and have more offspring.

The basis for this phenomenon has two main reasons.
1: The shape of the eye allows for better movement. Any angular shape that was not symetrical would cause spaces in the socket when moved side to side or up and down and would not facilitate proper motion in the entire field of vision.
2: As a physical property of 3-D objects, a sphere has the largest ratio of volume to surface area. Basically, it's the way to fit the most stuff inside of it with a given amount of covering. This makes the eyes the most efficient use of tissue and space. This physical property is the reason most fruit are round (and also the globe) and droplets of water without air resistance would be spherical. In 2-D, a circle is the best use of surface distance to maximize area within the structure (this is why droplets of water on a table are circular (actually they are spheres that are squished by gravity, but the same idea stands)

We all have a similar eye structure because it works, which causes that trait to be genetically preserved... AND because WE ARE ALL RELATED! Yes, you and that squid share some very basic traits, like DNA, cellular respiration etc. We share a common ancestor, if you go back far enough. We solve the problems of survival in some very similar ways ( we consume and digest food, we mate and reproduce, we grow and develop.....) It can make a lot of people really uncomfortable when they come to grips with the fact that, biologically speaking, we are just animals who have a superiority complex.
Super question!!

To see you can either turn your head or turn your eyes in their sockets. Muscles rotate the eye balls in their round sockets. This allows you to accurately focus on a single object. For animals, there could be a survival advantage in turning the eyeballs rather that the entire head of body which could attract the attention of predators.

A spherical shape is more efficienct and structurally sound. Also, it allows for the eye to rotate within the socket.

because a square eyeball would slip out of the skull recesses and fall to the ground to be stepped on by the clod who is now stumbling around wondering whay everything suddenly went dark.
