Research similar businesses to what you have in mind and find one you have a lot in common with, starting scenario wise. If there are mistakes to learn from and ideas to copy, make note. Furthermore, unless you have something relatively small in mind I would consider finding a partner in crime of dear importance. Good luck...

From personal experience, I will tell you it is a bad idea. Internet sales for a small business is not a reliable source of income. If you are looking into a retail or service based business, you should work on your physical location first. Open a neighborhood store, with the option for customers to buy online. eBay would be a good place to start online operations, or you could try www.estore.com. Until you have a good income from your physical location, don't worry too much about the online store.

like the crazyone said, the internet market is very saturated nowadays. it's going to be hard to attract a big-enough audience and convince them that your product/service is right for them. a lot of people now are worried about spammers, etc. when they click a link to a product... that's my take on it.

First you have to find something that is going to sell, and with how big the internet is, that's going to be very hard.

Do your research and check things out first. Make sure you know what your market is and who your buyers will be.
