who pays for burial of a family member if no one has the money?

That is a good question. I would hope that the decedant would have some insurance,that way at least some money would be coming in months later.The family would have to combine their resouces,maybe charge the burial/cremation[cheaper] on a credit card and pay in installments,until the insurance paid off,or the home and belongings of the decedant could be sold to pay off the debts also.What about someone buying an insurance policy now,before this person dies? If no one has any money and no family member can be found,the State usually will put the decedant in a pauper's grave,and try to collect from surviving family members by checking records,etc.

They are people who have collected funds to help people in financial difficulty to bury a deceased member of the family. Even if this is not forthcoming, the cheapest mean of burial would be undertaken by some kind souls. The deceased may be cremated or is provided with just a mat or few pieces of plank to box the deceased body for burial into the grave. You have also seen mass burials taken place. The bodies were just dumped into the pit dugged out for the purpose. So need not worry some kind soul is out there to help out when this problem arises.

Some deceased who may have friends who would dole out money when they visit the deceased at the memorial service. The contribution may exceed the cost of burial.

If this is not available, then all the family income earning members must chip in to finance the funeral.

In China, there were stories about selling themselves to get money for burial. This may still be seen happened in China.
