The White Castle restaurant in Wichita, Kansas is credited with being the first fast food restaurant, even though the term "fast food" was not used when the restaurant opened in 1921.

McDonalds is often credited as the first fast food restaurant. The corporation we know today opened it's first store in Des Plaines, IL (a Chicago suburb) in 1955.
However, Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonalds got the idea for his restaurants from the McDonald brothers of San Berandino, CA. Kroc was once a salesman for a milkshake mixer. Upon seeing the lines of people being served cheap meals with incredibly fast service he invested his life savings in starting his own "McDonalds."
White Castle by the way was founded in 1921 in Witchita, Kansas. It's only relation to Chicago is that the familiar "white castle" was loosely based on the famous "Water Tower" in downtown Chicago.

I don't know about the very first fast food, but I do know the very first Del Taco. It opened in Lenwood, CA. You can still go there today. And, they load up all the food...you won't find another Del Taco in American where they give as much food!

I think that the accolade must go to the genius in, I think, the mid nineteenth century who thought of serving fried battered fish with chips in England. The actual origins are disputed but whoever it was, it was a great idea.
