It varies by restaurant and style of dining.

With casual dining, some will earn minimum wage and may get tipped out by the servers.

I host in fine dining and make over 3 times of minimum wage and don't receive a tip out. If we don't have someone doing coat check, we'll divide those tips between the hosts working that night.

Fine dining hosts usually start at around $10 an hour.

Waitresses usally get paid less because of their tips. Hostesses usually get paid more but no tips. I did hostess for a while at a mom and pop place at the time I was making $5.50 an hour. I also waitressed there and was making $2.13 an hour. As a waitress I averaged around $6-7 an hour over all. There were times though that I would have a crazy good night and make over $20 an hour. This was when I was a teenager around 10 years ago though.

Each business will differ for what they pay hostesses. I had a job at a resturaunt where the hostess got paid an extra $3.00 an hour because they didn't get tips. They do not get to share the tips with the waiter/waitresses because they are suppose to report those at then end of their shift. You would have to ask the manager to find out for sure how much you would get paid for being a hostess, and you won't get any tips.

Host/Hostesses are usually paid minimum wage, however, at alot of finer restaurants they do more than just seat you when you check in. In alot of restaurants, the head hostess is also the 'office manager' / or 'banquet manager' and spends alot of time behind the scenes organizing the business. As to tipping them, who doesn't like a little extra scratch. They do not share the tips in most restaurants.

Where I work, the hostess are paid $5.15 an hour. Along with being a hostess, they also bus tables, assist servers, have restroom duty, and open and close the front door for customers. The servers pay tip outs to bar tenders and hostess.

I worked in as a waitress (PC term: Server) for four years and occasionally sidelined as hostess for extra cash. In that case, we got paid $6.00/hour and we didn't receive a share of the tips. However, I know that one of my friends worked as a hostess in another restaurant and part of her job was to clean off the tables and put silverware, etc on them, so she received 1% tipout from the servers because she made it easier for them to turn over tables so they would make more money. I think it depends entirely on the restaurant's policy.

I work in fine dining and they usually start at $10/hour, plus we get a cut of the gratuity, as well as any cash tips the guests choose to leave. Beats the heck out of fast food:)

They should make a little more than the min. wage, but it totally depends on the business on the tip issue.
Some do, some don't.
