There are 36 inches in a yard, so 1/12 of a yard is 36/12 = 3 inches. Therefore, 4 1/12 yards = 4*(36) + 3 = 147 inches.
I think the people getting 162 are misreading the 1/12 as 1/2.

1. Convert 4 1/12 yards to a proper fraction, 49/12 yards.
2. (49/12 yards) * (3 ft/1yard) * (12 inches/1foot) The units for feet and yards cancel out and you're left with (49*3*12)/12 inches.
3. Divide this fraction and you will get 147 inches.
The Quart Problem:
(9 cups)*(1pint/2 cups)*(1 quart / 2 pints), the pints and cups cancel out, leaving 2.25 quarts.
Also, someone is giving thumbs down to everyone that said 147 inches and thumbs up to people that said 162 inches for the first question. 147 is the correct answer. The people saying 162 are misreading the 4 1/12 as 4 1/2.

To convert yards to inches, use the unit fractions: [3ft/1yd] & [12in/1ft].
4½ yds * [3ft/1yd] *[12 in/ft] = (4½)(3)(12) inches
= 162 in.
[The units yd & ft canceled, leaving the unit of inches]

(49/12) [yds] x (3ft/ 1yd) x (12 in/1ft)
units cancel out, and you get 147 in.
