Alonso is a very talented driver. The 2006 championship was definitely the best fight from recent years, with Michael pressing too much early on (and in retrospect, a few mistakes here that ultimately meant the difference in the championship as much as the last race failures)... and Alonso pressing and cracking a little under the pressure in the second half (though ultimately pulling it off).
The plus for Alonso is that he is young and already has two championships! The minus though is also that he is young and may not have really appreciated what a good situation he had at Renault. Similar to his outbursts in the closing parts of the '06 championship, I wonder if he didn't let himself get too emotional and goto Mclaren to spite what he felt was Renault's lack of commitment to him.
Regardless of the reason, he is now with Mclaren. Mclaren is a good team and will always have the potential to be competitive against the best teams in F1... but their recent history of race failures and the lack of Adrian Newey could result in merely competing for a podium as opposed to regularly challenging for the top step. Add to that the observed emotional behavior and there is the strong possibility of some stormy days to come.
Of course, looking at Alonso as a driver and what Mclaren could be capable of, there is some very good possibilities as well. I personally think this next season could be a very up and down season, and how will Alonso will ultimately do over his Mclaren career will be determined by how well he is able to ride the downs and stay focuses and commited to the team. For Mclaren's part, they will have to make reliability the top priority (even over pace). Given that, a third championship could be likely... maybe even a fourth! I don't think there will be more than that unless both he and his team find another level against the competition (as did Schumacher and Ferrari).

I think the biggest differentiator last year was tires, since that's a non-issue now we may see a different season altogether. As far as Alonso goes, I think we won 2 champs more in spite of himself than due to his driving. We all saw how he handles pressure last year. If he can blast out on the season with a few crushing victories he could take another championship, but I think the more likely will be after a few breakdowns and other problems we'll start to see "the bird" and cutting drivers off again. Alonso is young so if he sticks with it he's bound to win another title or 2 but I'm not really sure this year was the right move for him.
And I agree the Japanese GP engine failure cost Michael #8.

I think he moved to Mclaren thinking it was a good move. Despite Mclaren having a really bad year in 06, it is one of the top teams in F1. He thought he was moving up.
I believe that he jumped ship too soon. Had he stayed with Renault for another 2-3 years, he would have maybe won 2 more championships. IMaybe he was given an offer he couldnt refuse by Ron Dennis. (who, by the way, i think is too full of himself)
Bottomline is, he is with a team that has the resources to bounce back. It may be a shift too soon but sooner or later we will see him win another championship or 2. Lets hope he delivers for Mclaren. Because if he does not deliver as expected in the early stages, he might be on the road to what Montoya experienced with Ron.

i think of he's a actual champion. I agree that asking Massa to circulate over while he had his first risk for a win and on the song that he had his accident on grew to become into completely unfair and unwarranted in my opinion. I ought to assert that Alonso has been the main consistent driving force in the final 0.5 of the season. yet i might want Mark Webber to win it, due it being see you later for the reason that there grew to become into an Australian champion and he's the only driving force who's had to get around a his team no longer helping him and from time to time purposely putting him at a draw back

I think Schummi only won 7 because he didn't have any real competition. Montoya? Hakkinen? Damon Hill? those were his biggest rivals.
Alonso might be in the same position so he might win more than 5. F1 doesn't have the Sennas, the Prosts, the Mansells and the Piquets of old.

I do not believe Alonso will be in F1 long enough to win 7. I would be suprised if he won more than 3.

I agree 100% buddy!
Michael should have clinched the championship and he could have, but unfortunately his good luck abandoned him at the worst possible moment.
But I reckon Alonso will probably win another two championships at most. Having said that, he did say that he will retore after his next championship...
FORZA FERRARI!! FORZA SCHUMEY!!
