Don't get them in pairs. They need to be kept with at least 2 females for every 1 male. If if you want 6 guppies, get 2 males and 4 females. If you have equal amount of males and females, the males will harrass the females too much, and the stress will kill the females. I am a guppy breeder and have written an article on guppy breeding that you should find helpful.

DO NOT go for equal numbers of males and females. Thats a sure way to get males fighting. You need at least 3 females to each male, more if you have the room. Some say only 2 per male but from my fishkeeping experience I say 4 or 5 per male is better;

In the native language, guppies are named "millions" because they live in such high population densities.
They will not fight, but 3:3 is considered a bad ratio for sustainability. Guppies are sex machines, and sometimes the males will harrass the females to death in even ratios like that. They will literally bang the females to death because they become so driven to mate. They are not monogomous maters. 1 male prefers to mate with several females. Results do vary on the harrassment front, but the traditional wisdom is 3x females than males. I do have friends with high male : female ratios & they don't seem too bad off though. Luck of the draw I guess...
Its dissappointing knowledge, since the females are big and bland.

Contrary to popular belief, guppies are quite territorial when breeding, on the plus side, they are too small and their mouths are too delicate to do anything about it! lol Most stores do sell them in pairs, only because the females have so little color that they wouldn't sell except to people that want to breed them. The best combination is to have one male for every 3-4 females, but pairs will be ok too. If you want to breed them for fun the pet shop guppies will be fine, if you want to be really serious about guppies and breed specific colors you need to join the IFGA (International Fancy Guppy Association) and buy your fish from other members through the mail. You will get much better quality fish, in the right ratio of males to females and loads of helpful advice from expert breeders.
Best of luck with you fish!

No they dont fight. But, you need about 3 females for every 1 male you have in your tank.

No, they won't fight. But guppies are like rabbits...you'll have a lot more than 6 if you have couples. You need some nice hairy water weeds in your tank or they'll eat their young, or any fish small enough to look like dinner unless you give them a place to hide.

MALES will bite the hell out of each others tails, unless you maintain a ratio of 2 females to a male.

guppies are very docile and don't mind being together. in fact i have 76 guppies in a 90 gallon tank. it doesn't mater how many you have together as long as you have enough room.

you dont have to pair them off unless you are looking to breed certain colors out of them. If you are going to breed and are not looking to breed for colors you only need a couple of males for 8-10 females. watch them closely it is fun to watch them mate. even moreso when they are bearing live babies.
