Depends where you live, downtown if you said hello to everyone that passed, you would have a sore throat before the police arrested you for being a nut. In the small towns if only 1 or 2 people passed it is just courtesy to nod or give a faint smile. If we are in conversation with others as we walk we don't like to be bothered every 10 or so steps to be interrupted. Or perhaps people have to much on their mind to give a formal greeting. I agree that there are times that people are down right rude but not often and we do not know what is going on in their life.

If I pass close by a person I do smile and nod. But, I can understand people being afraid too. We have only to read the newspaper or watch TV news to hear the horror stories of things happening to people just walking down the street. Very sad state our country is in.

Were busy? We might have something on our mind besides smiling and talking to the Complete stranger walking by us? I try to smile and say hello to everyone I'm about to interact with, or speak too. Just because not every stranger you see on a crowded street doesn't say hello does not mean we are living in fear or have low self esteem. It might mean we have other things going on besides making a complete stranger feel better.

i believe the answer you're looking for are sterotypes. i have a tonn of explainations such as okay for teenagers, i walked into a store once and the guy was talking to me asking me questions from the moment i walked in from the moment i walked out, and then i realized. he took my money, he owed my 5 bucks and my boyfriend went back and the man refused to give it to me and he just said i dont make mistakes. also at lunch time my school leaves and goes to convienent centres and outside of the store theres usually a sign that says 2 STUDENTS at a time..not adults , people. children. STUDENTS they think that all teenagers steal which isnt true at all i know people who steal but yet myself i've never stolen a thing in my life. Also alot of caucasians are afraid of black men because they think that they will kill us or something. im not afraid i treat them as equally as everybody else. also they way people dress, people think that all goths warship the devil and thats not true at all, some do but mostly not all of them, and wiggers people think all wiggers are drug dealers and do drugs and steal. my exboyfriend was a hardcore wigger and he never smoked pot before or anything more then that or he never stole.. i really dont know what this world is comming to.

I don't think its because people are scared, but rather that they are rude. I smile and say hello and I don't even get a smile or anything. People in this world have gotten so mean. If everyone said hello to each other the world would be a much better place.

Because the far left in this country try to tell everyone that it is wrong to defend your self. You can't fight back and if you do you will go to jail. If someone attacks you then it is clearly YOUR fault. Yo must have OFFENDED them in some way. We let gangs run in our streets, criminals are set free to rap and rob at will.

Many are unconscious what is around them when they walk pass you. You are lucky to receive any response from greeting each one you meet when you pass him/her by. Or they have forgotten to be civil and to respond to your greeting. Fortunately there is one like you. You must keep going on with your greeting to anyone passing you by. But remember some people may think you are crazy or having nervous problems. And so, they avoid you just as if they are afraid of you which they do because they think you are abnormal, unusual or mad. Even in the church, you may find your greeting may fall into deaf ears. Maybe our span of relating to friends are limited or we are just wanting to relate to people whom we know. But your action will be able to get people to notice you and gradually you are going to have lots of people greeting back to you or responding to your greeting. So if they are afraid of you, they think you are crazy or mad.
