Carbon Monoxide is heavier than air. You should place the detector downstairs, about 1 foot from the floor for maximum protection. You can add another upstairs, but place it the same way, down low on the wall.

Both ..BUT with my own set of answers as well. ...Put one near the heating source downstairs, one mid way up the stairs and then another nearest to the bedroom that is closer to the stairway, AND I PERSONALLY would put one outside of each bedroom or just inside of each bedroom. This might seem like overkill, but depending on where each of the rooms is located there might be a distance from each room to the next and it would keep everyone safe. I would rather be overkill with it than to have one of my Family killed from NOT putting one inside or just outside their bedroom doorway. Good luck and hope it all helps to keep the Family safe.

The lowest area. CO is heavier than air. However! I would want one in each bedroom to protect you while sleeping. If doors are shut and CO is accumulating in your room but not the area where the detector is put, BAMM! your dead!

Near bedrooms no matter what floor they are on. During the day, you are up and may be able to determine that your headache and drowsiness is associated with CO poisoning. At night, when you are asleep, bye bye!
