It is the center of the movie world in India.

Per Wikipedia:

"Bollywood (Hindi: बॉलीवुड, Urdu: بالیوڈ) is the informal name given to the popular Mumbai-based Hindi language film industry in India. The term is sometimes used incorrectly to refer to the whole of Indian cinema.

"The name is a blend of Bombay, the English name for Mumbai, and Hollywood, the centre of the American film industry. Though some purists deplore the name, arguing that it makes the industry look like a poor cousin to Hollywood, it seems likely to persist and now has its own entry in the Oxford English Dictionary. Such names have also been used for other industries, including Kollywood, Tollywood, Lollywood and Nollywood."

bollywood means movies made by the Bombay based movie industry made mostly in Hindi (There are a very few made in English). It's now called Mumbai, but Bollywood has stuck. Just like Hollywood movies are made by the Los Angeles/Hollywood based movie industry. These movies typically have song/dance numbers in them, and include playback singers.

India made movies make Bollywood. Many of the production companies are in Mumbai, India. Somehow the accent and the name of the town mixed it with the making of movies is how we hear Bollywood.

for a taste of Bollywood...try "Bride & Prejudice"
I got it on accident from Netflix (meant Pride & Prejudice...the Kiera Knightley/Matthew Mcfayden one) and watched it since I had nothing better to do...and liked it (so shocked)! Bollywood is huge in India and for those that have immigrated from India to US. I have a friend and co-worker from India who gives me all the 411!
