You will not put on weight if you do not eat more and continue with the same exercise routine.
As far as protection goes, the pill is better than condoms in protecting you from getting pregnant, however it will not protect you from an STD. So please use a condom either way.
The pill does help some women with their period. Mine is much lighter and less painful when I'm on the pill. Also shorter. It also regulates your period so you'll always know when it's coming.
The down side to the pill is that you must take it every day or it might not work. Also, something that not everyone knows, if you take an antibiotic or some other meds, your pill might not work. So always check with your pharmacist.
You should not smoke while you're on the pill (or off for that matter) since that might increase your chances of getting a blood clot.
Speak with your OB/GYN to see what might work for you. The pill is certainly not the only form of birth control

As with any medication there are side effects. It is true that there is a possibility of a small weight gain, But just as many women LOSE a pounds when they go on the pill. The pill (as long as you remember to take it the same time every day) is highly effective, and takes the stress out of contraception, you don't have to worry about condoms breaking or not having any on hand. As for other ways the pill can help you is that you know exactly when you will start and end your period, sometimes down to the hour. also it can help with cramps and other PMS + period related problems.
