So i was in school talking to my friends, Kate and John. We were talking about relationships and i made a joke saying that you should hook up eith kate. we all laugh until he said "i would never date a white person" and me and kate looked and asked why. He said "because white peole are phony and untrustworthy". Why would he say a thing like that and is this true? What do you think?

This is kind of a hard question to answer. Because I think every race has their own stipulations about another. Its the same reason why I have heard some whites say black people produce crime and fail in school.

Anyway this is not racist this is called stereotyping. Which a lot of people do. He may have some history dealing with phony white people that made him actually believe this. I have dealt with many white people, and I must say a few of them are quite phoney. These were mainly in my career arena so thats acceptable, because most people are phoney period. It seems like you and him are still cool, because you didnt state in your question that you were mad and ending his friendship. This is relative to whomever is subject. For some reason he just doesnt trust white people. But there really isnt a true of false to this.

Somebody in his life, or in the life of somene else who is very close to him, is probably white. Whoever that is, whatever actually happened, he is characterizing it as "phony and untrustworthy".

Obviously, the terms "phony" and "untrustworthy" are terms that mean something to him. What he doesnt see, and you probably dont either, is that these are words that he has merely attributed to an experience that has nothing to do with authenticity and trust, but rather he has defined the experience in terms of a meaning that makes sense to him.

He is undoubtedly hurt, or suffering fromn some imaginedm perceived hurt or discomfort, or else he's defending someon else in his life who suffered at the hands of a white person, didnt get what he or she expected, failed to get the acnowledgement he or she wanted and anticipated etc. etc.

All this just goes to show how automatic and mechanical and machine-like our responses can be to stimuli that originates within us, the restimulation of stimuli we apparently have no control over such that we make stupid and thoughtless comments having no basis in reality.

haha thats quite humorous. It's probably a stereotype he picked up somewhere from a past experience or things he has heard. We all at some point have stereotyped. African Americans are good in sports, Hispanics play soccer well, the French smell..you know etc, etc. But my opinion would be to ask how he came to this conclusion, and explain to him how ideas like these hurt our society, because they do. Its not right to judge someone based on a generalization.
good luck- i hope he gets some common sense.

I can see where you were friends with Kate and John, but John and Kate were not friends. That was an embarassment to Kate. If you don't stick up for Kate then you should lose her as a friend. And because John was your friend and he doesn't know any better than to keep his mouth shut about his feelings and try to empbrasse you and himself why should you keep him as a friend? My response might be "that's your opinion only", or to depersonalize it I'd say "that's your opinion". Everyone has opinions, can voice them, and these days do voice them openly. America has lost it's couth.

You shouldn't have to ask that. I'm sure you have your own opinions on how you veiw white people. This is a good way to see how your friends think & shows that racism is still alive & well....even by the black community.
