What is the point of squaring numbers? I just having a problem gasping it.

Example of what I'm talking about is like 5^5 is 25.

The purpose of squaring a number is to find the area.

You will see this a lot in measurements, for example, the square footage of a room. It is the length times the width.

2 x 5 is short for 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 10
2^5 is short for 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 32
5^5 = 5 x 5 x 5 x 5 x 5 = 125 x 25 = ... .
5^2 = 5 sqaired = 5 x 5 = 25

5^5 = 5x5x5x5x5 = 3125
5 squared is 5^2 (five to the power of 2) or 5x5 = 25

Pythagorean theory uses squares: In any right triangle, the area of the square whose side is the hypotenuse (the side of a right triangle opposite the right angle) is equal to the sum of areas of the squares whose sides are the two legs (i.e. the two sides other than the hypotenuse). There are many other mathematical uses.

Squaring is multiplying a number times itself. 5² is five squared or 25. It comes in handy when computing quadratic equations and in a lot of geometry applications. It's really something that everyone should know.

Actually, 5^5 is not 25. 5^2 is 25.

You need to square numbers, so you can pass your freakin' algebra class.

By the way, 5^2 = 5*5 = 25.

there is no major concept to grasp. To square any number just multiply it by itself two times. 5(5)=25, 6(6)=36, ...

5^2 = 5 x 5

you just multiply that number twice

and 5 x 5 means 5+5+5+5+5

5^5 is actually 3125, 5^2 is 25.

There are probably some uses out there but not too many.

Imagine you have a checkerboard, and you want to know how many squares there are. well, it has 8 on one row and 8 in one column. If you know the square 8 x 8, then you know how many there are. If not, then you get to count them all.
