I think democracy succeeds when you have someone in office who can balance the needs of the overall population yet still cater to big business without giving one more power than the other. Also someone who can deal well in foreign policy. The conress and the senate have to be open minded, ready to work, balanced (even number of republicans and democrats), and mindful toward the future. Democracy fails when people like Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and ashcroft are givin power and are not checked by the house.Which brings me to the former republican controlled house. They never worked, they constantly took bribes and let bush have his war with a virtually unlimited budget so they can go swim in their unlawfully gained millions. If there ever was a perfect example of the failure of democracy it has been the bush administration.

Democracy works best when all of its citizens participate. Unfortunately, only a small segment of the American population vote consistently.

Simple democracies fail to take care of the less fortunate individuals in the society. It is a pull-yourself-up-by-your-boots- straps philosophy. Social democracies understand the value of caring for all of its citizens a beneficial to the common good of the society.

Democracy succeeds when its members agree from the citizen to the ruler level. Or, if they disagree they find constructive solutions. It falls apart at the seams when groups try to rip it apart by using force (i.e. starting a war like our Civil War).

Democracy only fails when the government takes too much power away from the citizens. (Thus making it not so much of a democracy anymore.)
