I personally think that the most important year was 1968 because of the Tet Offensive, the assignations of King and Kennedy, the election of Nixon and finally the Apollo trip around the moon.
Please, give the year of your birth and where you live.
Me, 1957; Detroit.

While 1968 was an important year, I will say the most important year was 1962 due to the Cuban Missle Crisis. If the United States were unable to negotiate with Soviet Union (and vice versa), then I would think that 1968 would be of no magnitude as it was.
Remember, the Soviets did have Medium Range Ballistic Missles that could hit Washington D.C, and the United States would at the time only have about 5-10 minutes of warning prior, which would practically vaporize most of the United States.
The movie Thirteen Days, is a movie I would recommend to acknowledge the actual importance of this, because it was it shows how close the United States was at going to WWIII, and perhaps the end of the world.

I was born 1957 too - obviously a good year. I come from Greece but live in England.

Most important year in the last 100 years would be 1945 simply for the cessation of the last World War, the creation of the United Nations and the start of Ελληνικός εμφύλιος πόλεμος (The Greek Civil War).

There were many important years. Maybe 1914-assasination of Archduke Frank Ferdinand sparked WWI. Or 1929-stock market crash led largely to WWII. Perhaps 1945-the end of WWII and the results of this led to the Cold War. Possibly 1991-the fall of the Soviet Union. Or maybe, in the future, 2001 will be seen as decisive- the 9/11 attacks led to the US' wars in the Middle East, that have no end in sight, and look to grow ever larger.
