Oxygen nucleii are formed in stars by nuclear fusion. They in turn fuse to form Silicon which releases heat that keeps the star burning. Silicon can be converted to Iron which also releases heat but then the process stops - stars can't easily make elements heavier than Iron which is why elements up to the weight of Iron are common in planets (Earth has an Iron/Nickel core) and those heavier than Iron are not. Silicon and Oxygen are common at Earths surface because they are (relatively) light and so floated to the surface of the Earth to form, literally, a crust. Most of the Earth is composed of much denser minerals that contain a lot of Iron (no surprise there) and Magnesium.

Silicon and Oxygen are created by stars as they burn up their fuel. Before the star explodes it compresses and burns carbon which makes oxygen. When the carbon is gone it gets hotter and turns some of the oxygen into Silicon. Then BOOM. One such star exploded and it wasn't long afterwards that the solar system formed out of the wreckage. Which is what we are made from.

Of course, when I say burn, its a nuclear fusion process and not a fire.
