All five of my dogs were rescued. I don't agree in paying 500 bucks for a dog in a pet store or from a breeder when you can rescue one and give it a second chance at having a good life. The first one I rescued was a pure-bred malimute husky that had been abused. A neighbor found her and couldn't afford to keep her so I went over to have a look since I didn't have a dog of my own. She was beautiful but had been starved and had gashes on her face and body from being subjected to dog fights. She also had a ring around her neck where fur was missing because of her collar being way too tight. We went to court and got the owner (once we found out who it was) for animal cruelty. The second dog I rescued was at my workplace. It was a little terrier mix and just hung out under people's cars. Someone had apparently dumped her off and she didn't know how to get back home so she stayed there for a couple days. She was terrified of people so she wouldn't let anyone near her but eventually I got close enough to her to grab her and take her home with me so she could have a decent meal. I noticed burn marks on her ears from what appeared to be caused by a cigarette lighter. She is now perfectly healthy and loves having people around. One of the other dogs I rescued was in a box on the side of the road with his sister; they were just puppies and one had either been hit by a car or attacked by an animal because she was limping, and the other was doused with gasoline (I hate to think of what the owner was going to do with him in that condition). Unfortunately the puppy with the hurt leg did not make it, but the other dog has a loving home now where noone will think of doing such terrible things to him. My fifth dog who is only 5 months old now was at the pound and due to medical problems they were going to put her down so I adopted her and took her to the vet to get fixed up. After about 6 visits she's now perfectly healthy and you can't tell anything was ever wrong with her! My mother also found a stray wandering around the house and she decided to take him in since the county we're from has no room at the shelter for any more animals.
If you're thinking of getting a dog or cat, or even a small animal PLEASE consider a shelter first! These animals just want loving homes and many are put to sleep because of lack of space.

Lets Say I Tried But It Died Afterwards. A Squirrel Drowned In My Pool, And I Took It Out and I Tried CPR (but i would never put mouth to mouth). I Actually Used A Stick and I Was Pushing Down On The Chest, And i Know I'm Retarded For Doing That But I Tried. And Then It Died. Another Story.........A Stray Cat Came To My House, And I Thought I Was Gonna Keep It, So I Named It JewLs. Then i Found Out That It Had A Broken Tail And Puss Came Out And All These Fluids. Ugh! I Almost Threw Up. So I Just Turned It Into The Vet And It Went To The Pound. So Sad. And Thats All. So I Never Really Rescued An Animal.

Yes I have rescued an animal. It was a 4 month old puppy who had been abandoned in his previous owners apartment without food or water for 4 days! They moved out and left the dog. It was a long haul but Ranger was one of the best dogs I ever had. He was rough on the furniture for a while ( I had to replace my couch twice and my kitchen chairs at least once a piece) I had to pick up the garbage so many times I can't count. I had to replace 3 pairs of my husbands work boots but the dog was so faithful and protective of me and my children I overlooked all this and figured eventually he would realize that I was coming back. I tried tying him out but this stressed him so much he would quiver for hours after I got home. It is a long process and it takes the right kind of person but the rewards are well worth it.

I went to the animal shelter to look at the dogs for my son. When in the puppy room, I spotted a long haired guinea pig in a 12x14 glass cage. It had barely enough room to turn around or move. I asked the technician to get it out & this burly, 6' guy says, "oh no, I don't like those things. Find someone else to help you". So I talked him into letting ME get it out, which he did. Problem was, once I had it in my hands, thats when I realized its fur was matted all over its hindside with feces & urine. It was pitiful. I asked for a box, paid $15 & took "him" home. Once I gave the poor thing 3 shampoos in a row & got its rear end cleaned up & trimmed, I realized it was not the "he" they sold me, but a "she". That sweet little girl piggie is very happy now. I'm glad I rescued her from the "rescue", which was deplorable. Rescue pets are often the most grateful & end up making wonderful companions. Good luck to you.

Last week we had a small terrier type dog wander up to our house. We're on about 40 acres so there is no telling where she came from. She was so thin and had a very bad puncture wound on her hind right leg. I wish I could have kept her but I have too many critters already, so I had to take her to the humane society, hopefully she will find a nice home. No matter what I know she's better than she was before. I have a feeling that she came from the two guys that live down the dirt road, they have almost 100 dogs and who knows how many horses. All of them are mangey looking, and the saddest part is that one of the guys is a vet.

We have rescued lots. All of our animals besides the dogs that we currently have have been strays.
Here's some pets we've rescued in the past
Bear--Belgium Sheepdog- was shelter dog, we fostered him and fell in love
Lucky-- Dalmation/Lab-shelter dog, was about to be put to sleep
Chance-- Olde English sheepdog- rescue
Tigger-- tabby cat- stray, we've had him for about 12 yrs
Elvis-- cat- someone threw him out of their car window when he was a kitten, we were outside and saw it happen, so he lives with us now
Chloe-- stray cat, found her wandering in woods as 4 wk old kitten while camping
Howie-- Californian rabbit- stray, believe it or not, was being raised for meat and had escaped pen, was running around neighborhood with other rabbit
Cody-- Dutch rabbit- shelter
Claire-- rat- bought from someone for $1 who was oing to use her as feed
Molly-- collie- was breeder at puppy mill, was rescued from by friend of family, they abused her, we rescued her fom them
Lucy-- cat-- was stray, running along side of high-way
So there is a few of our rescues over the years. Unfortunately, we only still have Tigger and Elvis. The dogs and cats have since passed and the rabbits are at a rescue because they agitated my asthma, but I miss them buckets.

One of our first German Shepards was a rescue. He was 50 lbs underweight, and had no hair on his back, tail or hind legs due to mange. We had to isolate him for 30 days, and that was an ordeal with all the other animals. And it was in the middle of winter. His last owners left him chained out all the time, and their other dog would tease him constantly. It was a small dog. I won't mention how I got him. ;)
He had a wonderful personality, really loving and patient. He's why I love German Shepard's now, and have even bought our first puppy because of him. JerBear died about 3 years ago, from cancer. We got another German Shepard right before him, and she wandered in out of nowhere. She died last year, same thing, cancer. They were both wonderful dogs. We had our engagement pictures taken with them, and used that picture as our guest book at the wedding.

My sister's ex-boyfriend was a hateful and cruel individual who abused both animals and people. He got an adorable female black lab puppy and had her for a short time. He didn't try to train her so of course this sweet little puppy used the carpet. One night he beat and strangled this little baby until the blood vessels popped in her eyes for peeing on his stupid carpet. The next day they came to my house with the puppy and she was limping and so hungry that she was eating up the cat food but could barely open her little jaws. I could see what he had done right away so I pretended not to notice and offered to watch her for the night while he went out, and while he was gone we took her to the animal shelter and told them what he had done and they took the dog in. I would have loved to have kept her but couldn't, at least we got her away from that evil monster.

I rescued a baby pit bull one time. I was driving down the street and out of the corner of my eye I saw this woman running towards us then turn around and head back. For some reason I started scanning the street and sure enough a baby pit bull had gotten loose. I made my husband stop the car and we got ahold of it and held it until the woman came after it.

I rescued my Chihuahua that i have now! He was mistreated by the family that had him before me! He was kicked, they did not feed him that much (because he was extremely skinny)! So i rescued him from that family! My dog was very uncomfortable around my family when i first brought him home! We would try to pet him and he was run away really quick thinking we were going to hit him! I was really sad, that someone mistreated him the way they did! My family finally gained his trust and he is a really good dog, but there are times he will still run away from me when i want to pick him up or something! He has also gained some weight! His name is Poblo, and he is really spoiled now!!!
