i'd call and explain the situation to the one that hasn't offered yet and ask if they are close to making a decision and if you are in the running

You are in one of the best possible situations for a job seeker to be in. No kidding. Play them off of each other baby! Seriously, call the one you really want and say, "I am extremely interested in working for you and you are my first choice, but I have had another offer. Is there any way that we can come to an agreement because I would much rather work for you." Stall the job offer on the table by asking for the offer in paper, saying that yes, you are very interested, but need a few days to decide, etc. Often saying that you need to discuss it with a significant other is a good way to evade what is called an "exploding offer". Think fo salary negotiating as a poker game - don't show your had too early, but try to get others to let you know what they have and bluff a little. My husband and I have both been in this situation a couple of times apiece and what has resulted has been a 10-25% increase in salary offers for each of us. If the job on the table backs off (which they seldom do until you go back and forth at least a few times), it wasn't meant to be. Don't give up on what you really want to do. Best of luck.

It depends on which job you want more, or which one has the better pay.
Personally, I'd suggest you try to stall the other employer about an answer until you're completely sure that the other job still isn't up for grabs. If he refuses, I think you should take the job. It seems like the second employer wants you more, considering you had an interview with him later, and yet he called you first.
Hope I helped!

That is a dilly of a pickle... You need to tell the back up job that you are interested in the position but you need a few more days to make a decision. Call the other employer on Monday of next week and see if they are close to a decision. You may also want to tell them your situation - That you really want the job with them but your back up has made an offer of employment. Emphasize that you want their job though and that you look forward to them making a decision.

I WOULD NOT TELL the company that offered you a poition that you are holding out for another. I would go ahead and accept the position that way if they other company does not offer, you still have landed soemthing. Would you want to decline this offer and then not get hired by the other? Then where does that leave you? Square one again!
If you do accept the offer from the first one, and the other one offers as well, choose between the two and give a "thank you for the opportunity" to the one you decline. Keep the cards in your hand ;-)

Call the other employer and tell them your situation. You really want to work for them but, there is another offer on the table. Tell them you need an answer by the end of the day.

you could take the job that was offered to you and then if the other place that you really want to work at offers you the job then just switch jobs. It is better to take the job that is being offered and have a job than to miss out completely if the other place doesnt offer you the job. I always keep an eye out for better opportunities regardless of where or how long i have been working somewhere. Good luck and congrats on the job!

This solution might seem a little awkward but it seems it might be the only one to resolve your dilemma. Call the person who interviewed you on Monday at the job you really want. Explain to him/her the situation that exists. Tell him/her you would prefer working for this company but you don't want to risk the possibility of having no job at all. If he/she is a fair minded person, they should be able to give you some kind of indication of your potential for working at this company.
Good luck!!

Dude, this is one of those "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" situations.
Take the job that has been offered. There is nothing to prevent you from backing out if you get the other offer in a couple of days.

If they have a lot of applicants, it might take a while to get through them all. Also, if they are not in a rush, they might dawdle. However, I'd say a week is more than enough time. Either give them a call to ask if your application came through or pop by to drop off a physical copy.

You may want to call the first employer to see if they are still considering you or not. Sometimes that is all you need to make an informed decision.
