If you have a dell it may be as simple as doing a system restore. Thus taking your pc back to a time when all operations worked, this can be done in safe mode. Click on start, then look for accesories then onto control panel, system restore will be an option. Easy step-by-step instructions to follow. Once restored to a date in the past all programs loaded since will be erased and listed for you to go through and check for nasties. If you don'y have a Dell pc, think of investing in Norton Ghost a program that performs the same trick

I think you are planning to use a sledgehammer to crack a walnut. You have been running XP and then loaded Vista (a pirated copy no doubt) and all the time you forgot to have the PC protected with anti virus software and a firewall. Phew. Frankly, assuming you have a legal copy of XP I would abandon your current hard drive, buy and install a new drive and then load it with XP + a firewall + anti virus software.

No viruses, and the compatibility issues will be resolved, when Vista is released and manufacturers upgrade their software. I have contacted several and they are ready. Please do not format your hard drive. Buy a new computer if you must.

To the person who made the comment that it's probably priated softeware, it's probably not. I could get windows Vista now too from microsoft. I have an msdn subscription through my work and their test version is available to people who have the subscription through there work. I don't know how to remove it though.

insert windows xp disc into disc drive, boot from the cd when you start your pc and go through the wiondows setup which mid way will give you the opportunity to format the drive before continuing to install xp.
