I know the persons email address but, as they do not know me, they may have a "junk" folder and therefore not open my email. I am trying to trace them on behalf of my daughter in Sth Africa

There are people finders, but you need to pay for them.

There are tons of them. Do a yahoo search on it.
Also, junk folders usually catch spam or something that resembles spam by the filter. Usually all mail just doesn't go directly into that folder.

Set up an email address in your daughter's name & mail them from that.
