Winding roads? Then you must go to Acadia National Park, whose Park Loop Road winds along the rocky ocean. If you're not afraid of heights, then take the winding road up Cadillac Mountain (elevation 1,530 feet) for even more breathtaking scenery.
Another road you might like is Maine Route 52, between Camden and Belfast. It's a backcountry road, but it's full of gradual dips and turns. The highlight is when the road hugs Lake Megunticook just outside of Camden. This stretch features 800-foot cliffs on one side and the lake on the other. There are brief sections here in which it looks as though the cliffs are rising out of the ground.
Specific destinations you might want to check out include:
(1) L.L. Bean's flagship store in Freeport
(2) DeLorme's Eartha globe (the world's largest rotating globe) at the company's Yarmouth headquarters
(3) The Camden-Rockport-Rockland area
You can drive up Mount Battie at Camden Hills State Park for a sweeping view of Penobscot Bay; visit the Owls Head Transportation Transportation Museum and the Owls Head Lighthouse in nearby Owls Head; visit the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse; attend the Maine Lobster Festival in Rockland in early August; see Andrew Wyeth paintings at the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland
(4) Belfast
(5) Fort Knox and the newly opened Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory, in Prospect (the 420-foot observatory opens in the spring)
(6) The Desert of Maine, in Freeport
(7) Portland area: Portland Head Light, in Cape Elizabeth; Spring Point Light, in South Portland; catch a Portland Sea Dogs (Red Sox AA affiliate) game
(8) Maine State Museum, in Augusta
(9) Bangor area: Stephen King's house, University of Maine Museum of Art, harness racing, Hollywood Slots, Leonard's Mills at the Maine Forest and Logging Museum in Bradley, Bangor State Fair at the end of July and beginning of August; Little League Baseball's Senior League World Series in Bangor in mid-August
(10) Moosehead Lake region: Moosehead Lake, Maine's largest; moose
(11) Baxter State Park, in Millinocket
(12) Don't just visit Acadia National Park, see all of Mount Desert Island and its quaint seaside towns

If you are considering travelling thru the western borders of Maine check out the roads going thru the White Mountains of New Hampshire. My husband says they are a beautiful ride in the summer on a bike. Good Luck & ENJOY!
