Go with the Jetta, Volkswagen is far better than Mazda. I still own a 1993 Jetta, the only thing I've replaced was the headlight. The Germans have a extremely high standard when building cars. My friends 2006 Mazda 6 has been in and out of the dealership with transmission and steering problems.

Actually, I would recommend checking out the Rabbit instead of the Jetta(IF you are interested in a German car). The Jetta is made in Mexico...the Rabbit is built in Germany, and the reviews have been very positive. The Civic/Mazda/Matrix are all good cars, but the noise levels on these entry level Japanese cars is high, and the overall driving experience after the excitement of bling/flash has died down is not on the level of the German car. I would do a side by side comparison on all the models and drive them as well(especially the HWY...) In todays modern car with traction control, 4-wheel drive is not really needed...just a good set of snow tires. For example, the VW comes standard with 4-wheel disc brakes...I believe the Matrix comes with drums on the rear(VERY dated technology)...also research the traction control/ABS airbags, etc, and see who gives the best bang for the buck.

I would say go for the Mazda. I am on my third one and had NO problems what so ever. Just make sure you keep the oil and filter changed and you are golden. Good Luck!

between the two you mention, I'd say go with the vw, personally, I'd say do a little more research and add the Honda accord into your search, you will see it is more reliable than either the mazda or the vw.

I would go with the mazda, parts will be cheaper, and I have had good luck with them.
