What do you do?
I'd particularly like to hear from the bosses. What should your employees do?

I have been a supervisor. technically, the only way to not spread a cold or flu is to stay home. However, I was angry when my employees called in with a cold. ( a typical cold). If you have the flu, if you get it like I do, you shouldn't move! (because it hurts)
If you have the flu, stay home, or if anything, go to the doc just for an appointment and get a note stating what you have. A doctors note is always best when missing a day from work. You can't really get in trouble for that. I suggest always getting a note if you have to miss work for any reason.

Typically most companies do not want you to come to work when you are sick. Unfortunately, the reality is that most people use up their sick time quickly and then it is not there when they need it. Employees should "bank" sick or vacation time so it is available for them when they need to use it and not use it every time they want to have an extended weekend, or are hung over because they went out with friends the night before and couldn't report to work. If you go to a doctor and get a note that you were unable to come to work due to illness then that will excuse that time, but not all the others!

You need to discuss your concerns with your boss. Tell him that you truly value your position and you would not stay home if not seriously sick. If he has to have written proof from doctor, then get it. Unless you have taken advantage of this type situation in the past, and you have been warned prior, you should not loose your job.

You should not be penalized if you have a doctor's note. If you are frequently absent for illness and the position is a key one you can be replaced.
