For most international carriers limit is 50 pounds (about 23 kg). You can carry more but there will be additional charge. Air India allows 70 pounds.
For domestic carriers in India, it depends on the individual carriers. I flew Air deccan from Delhi to Pune and they allowed only 16 kg/person while on my return flight, indigo allowed 20 Kg.
I'm sure, carriers like Indian, Jet etc. allow more than the no-frill carriers.
Above information is strictly for economy class and I'd advise you to call your carrier if you don't want to pay for extra weight. For e-tickets, information about luggage will be on ticket.

An average size suitcase to go in the registered section (baggage compartment) of the plane and a small carry-on to put in the overhead bin. Actually, when I travel, I take only a carry-on (you don't want to bother with a suitcase, especially if you have transfer flights) and a carry-on is big enough for three days of clothing and all the rest of what you need in terms of your basic hygiene stuff, books mags and music).

Its 20 Kg for economy flights and 32kg for 1st class. Most airlines give some leeway (< 3kg) but not much. For hand luggage you allowed 7-8 kg and limit on the size of the luggage. Each piece of checked-in luggage should not be above 32kg for ease of luggage handling (safe for the handlers back). Hope this helps.

It depends on whether you are on a domestic or international flight, and what class of fare you are on (business or economy).
Generally, if you are an international flight you can take more on. If you in business class, you get to take more as well.
