1. Buy a live trap, havahart is a good brand name. Make sure it's big enough to catch a raccoon. Also make sure that it only has 1 door that opens. They are easier to set.
2. You'll need need to bait the trap. If the animal is in the house and you have no pets, you can use about anything. A can of sardines or Tuna works best. If it is outdoors or somewhere you can catch a pet use something Fruit based. Jam or something w/bananas works best.
3. if it is indoors make sure you set the trap somewhere away from wiring, insulation or carpet. Once the animal is caught it will reach through the cage and grab a hold of anything it can.
4. If the animal has babies and is in the house call a nuisance animal removal service. You will not be able to handle the problem on your own. It will cost you in the neiborhood of $50 for the service call and $30 - $50 per animal.
5. Once you catch it make sure you take it at least 5 mi. away, otherwise it may return. They have a knack for finding their way back. Good luck!

Depends where it is. If it's just visiting you outside, make sure not to leave the garbage out until your garbage collection day (they love that). Do not leave out any dog or cat food at all, ever.
If it's in your attic, (I had this situation), you go up in your attic in the daytime when you think it's not there, and make sure he's not in there. When you are sure he is gone, investigate for any possible entry points. Ours was climbing up the hose that went from the A/c unit into the ducts in the attic. There was a perfect space for him to get in there, little did we know. Then we sealed that and all other entry points with expanding foam insulation that comes in a can.
Our visitor eventually moved to another neighborhood and he wasn't hurt.
I hear they have these traps that don't hurt them. It's like a cage that shuts once they go in. Then you take them to the woods or something and set them free. I don't know where to get those, but your local Animal Control would probably know how to steer you, if you want to go that route.

I got one and called animal control and they said since it was IN my house (the attic) they could not do anything about it. It had babies in the wall too. I couldn't trap cause I didn't want the babies to starve in my walls and die and stink. She took them out when they got old enough. Not real long, but long enough. I also called this "critter catcher" place. They wanted 150 to set traps and 50 for every racoon they got. And would be there everyday to check. I couldn't afford that. That's just what I went through.

Call animal control and see if they can give you a live trap and pick it up once the racoon is in it.

I would also suggest the live traps. They work for oppossum and cats too, and it does not harm the animal.
If they are in or near your garbage you can also put pepper on your garbage, or ammonia inside the garbage can. They can't stand the smell and end up leaving.

In escalating order of intensity.
* don't feed it.
* don't leave food, garbage or garbage cans outside.
* install bright lights in the yard
* get a big dog that roams free in your back yard
* get a hav-a-hart trap, nab him and remove him to another location
* toxic substances - they don't have to be fatally toxic. if your racoon gets good and sick once or twice at your place he won't be back.

Raccoons come for your garbage so dont leave any out. Get you neighbor to stop bringing out their garbage because it is attracting the raccoons. Someone in your neighborhood is not securing their trash.
Raccoons are otherwise quiet animals that keep to themselves and do not bother anyone. Raccoons are indigenous in North America, meaning they have been here longer than us and we are crowding them out of their territory.
Sorry, every now and then I would see them and they only check out my untidy neighbors. or those who leave cat food outside on the porch.
