Let me answer you from te point of view of an Ontarian who has immigrated to Quebec...

Yes it is true, Quebec is culturally different then the rest of Canada. We (I say "we" because I am francophone), are trully fixed to our French roots and some of us are just a bit too crazy about them...

Ever since the British won the Battle of the Abraham plaines, some Quebecois have been quicking themselves in the nuts for loosing that battle. Consequently, the British took over what was then knowned as New France, thus imposing a powerful regime to a settlement which wasn't used to so much control. The colonits where deprived of their rights, properties and many other things, but worst is that they were obliged to serve under the British Commonwealth, which was not accepted by all.

Move forward a couple hundrer years, many rights were baffled and the people of Quebec were litterally taken advantage of by the higher English class which controlled most big businesses in the province. The idea of separating was already circulating amongst the people.

Again a couple of years forward- 1960's, the Quebecois had had enough- hence the Quiet Revolution, were you could picture the Québécois taking control of their economy and province. It's during these years that a Ministry of Education was created and Hydro-Québec was nationalized. Well they were in such a hype that the idea of having their own country started making more and more sense. It's also in the 70's that took part the rise of the Parti Québécois, a nationalist political party which René Lévesque was leader.

The idea of having a proper economy in a separate country is still floating in the air amongst young and old. It may be possible, but the right person to lead the people to that goal has yet to come.

Quebec separatists believe that the people of the Quebec would be bettr off with their own economic, social and cultural development. They believe the federal government to be corrupt (can't argue with them there!) and that it has no hope of reform.

They are culturually different. Canada has a higher rate of crime and homosexuals. This annoys Quebec.
